Floor plans

Every scan also yields a scale drawing of the room it captured, with a floor area and a length on every wall. It is drawn as SVG, so it stays sharp on a phone and it prints.

A drawing you can act on

The plan is derived from the scan’s proxy mesh, which came off the device’s LiDAR. That mesh is already metric and already knows which way is up, so the measurements are the room’s, not an estimate scaled off a photograph.

What you get is a closed outline with a dimension on each wall and the enclosed floor area. Enough to answer the questions a recce leaves open: whether the dolly track fits, where the 12x12 goes, how far the camera can pull back before it is in the hallway.

Metres or feet

The toggle switches the whole drawing between metric and imperial. Nothing is stored in either unit; the plan is held in metres and converted when it is drawn, which is why switching is instant and why the stored measurement is never the wrong one for half the crew.

What it will and will not draw

The tracer measures the space, not the surfaces around it. It finds the horizontal area at floor level, keeps the largest connected region, and traces its boundary, so the result is a closed shape with square corners rather than a scatter of wall fragments.

An earlier version looked for vertical surfaces instead and drew each run it found. It reported the side of a wardrobe as a wall, drew both faces of one wall as two walls, and produced nothing that closed. Measuring the floor is what makes the outline a room.

Doorways read as gaps the trace closes, so an opening onto a hall does not drag the plan into the hall. A room that was scanned badly still produces a plan, and a low tracking score on the scan itself is the signal that its numbers are worth less than they look.
