Generating Portraits

Open the portrait modal to generate AI portraits, upload your own images, browse version history, and fine-tune generation settings like aspect ratio, negative prompt, and seed.

Opening the Portrait Modal

Click a character’s portrait thumbnail or the Generate / Regenerate button on any character row. The modal opens with the character’s current portrait (if one exists) on the left and all controls on the right.

Modal Layout

The modal is split into two columns:

Left Column

Image display area, drag-and-drop zone, and clipboard paste target. Drop or paste an image here to upload it directly.

Right Column

All generation controls: image prompt, style prompt, aspect ratio, negative prompt, seed, model picker, and the Generate button.

Prompt Controls

  • Image prompt — An editable text area pre-filled with the character’s description. Use the Auto-describe / Re-describe button to regenerate it from script context.
  • Style prompt — Pulled from the active production design. This field is read-only and shows the design’s visual style direction.
  • Aspect ratio — Choose from preset ratios (e.g., 1:1, 2:3, 3:4). The selected ratio affects the generated image dimensions.
  • Negative prompt — Describe what you don’t want in the image (e.g., “blurry, low quality”).
  • Seed — A number for reproducible results. Leave empty for a random seed.
  • Model picker — Select which AI model to use for generation.

Generate vs Regenerate

If the character has no portrait yet, the button reads Generate. After the first portrait exists, it changes to Regenerate. Each generation creates a new version — previous portraits are never overwritten.

Uploading an Image

You can upload your own portrait image in three ways:

  • File picker — Click the upload area to open a file browser
  • Drag-and-drop — Drag an image file onto the left column
  • Clipboard paste — Copy an image and press Ctrl+V / Cmd+V

Version Navigation

Every generated or uploaded portrait becomes a new version. Use the Older and Newer arrow buttons to browse through the version history. The version counter shows your position (e.g., “3 of 7”).

  • Use This Version — Set an older portrait as the current active portrait
  • Metadata display — Each version shows the model used, seed value, and negative prompt

Save as Design Default

When you find a seed and negative prompt combination you like, click Save as Design Default to persist those settings to the active production design. Future portrait generations for other characters will use the same defaults.
